‘Matrix’ Director’s Gender Transition Makes Her The Highest-Grossing Female Director Of All Time
When Matrix co-director Larry Wachowski became Lana Wachowski, she became the first major Hollywood director to publicly identify as transgender…Wachowski’s public embrace of her feminine identity makes her an important figure in the transgender community. But her transition makes her notable for a reason that has been much less widely reported on: She is now the top-grossing female director of all time.
You literally cannot make this shit up. Rich white dude = highest-grossing female director of all time. These are the fruits of transjacktivism: erasing females and erasing awareness of male privilege. The highest-grossing actual female director is Betty Thomas.
As a young girl aspiring to a top level career in classical music (which is EXTREMELY male dominated at the top levels of certain positions, especially conducting and composition) I experienced this bait and switch regarding the “great woman composer” Wendy Carlos.
Cruel and infuriating mindfuck, classic patriarchy.
Ridiculous. You only get credit if you were actually directing while being a woman. If you started a movie from scratch or nearly so, or were lucky enough to be pulled in to helm the big blockbuster while still facing some very real sexism, congratulations to you.* But to get credit for doing that even though you actually made your top-grossing movies while reaping all the benefits of being a dude is bullshit. Wachowski wasn’t a woman when those films were made, so pretending they were “directed by a woman” is rewriting history and lying.
Quasi-related: I’d rather watch Kung Fu Panada 2, Mamma Mia!, Twilight, or even Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squekquel before I watched either one of the Matrix sequels again. Calling those things shitty is insulting to poop.
*Yes, I am aware that making a feature-length movie, let alone one that actually makes money, is quite an accomplishment in and of itself. But let’s not pretend that it’s an accomplishment made on a level playing field.
